We hope you are ready to welcome Spring! On the March Equinox, people across the northern hemisphere commemorate the arrival of spring with many religious and cultural practices.

However you celebrate, we think we can all agree that more sun, warmth, the blossoming of nature, and a sense of renewal are a welcome change!

Spring is comparable to the work of dismantling prejudice––we:

🌲 Address its roots.

🌱 Plant and grow seeds of empathy, knowledge, and skills.

☀️ Renew our daily commitment to equity and inclusion.

Thank you for tending to this necessary work and for bringing light and hope to challenging times.

Sincerely,

Leigh Naturkach, Executive Director

Applications Now Open!

Are you, or do you know, a college or university enrolled student interested in dismantling prejudice?

Applications are open until April 30th to our two-year UofMosaic Fellowship program. Program participants engage in networking, community building, change-making in systems and communities, leadership & more!

Through the program, Fellows create and deliver a campus dialogue and research publication. These skills are practical and foundational to helping students of all ages successfully transition into early or new career stages, and bring anti-prejudice approaches to a variety of sectors.

Thank you to BMO and Reeta Roy for your support of UofMosaic.

International Women's Day

Women and gender diverse people make up roughly half the world’s population, but there is a long way to go to achieve the same rights and social, economic, cultural and political advancement as men.

This year’s IWD theme is EmbraceQuity and encourages everyone to talk about why offering equal opportunities alone are not enough. What does embracing equity mean? It means:

  • acknowledging people start from different circumstances

  • understanding people need targeted resources to achieve their potential

  • taking action within our own spheres of influence to identify and address gender prejudice through an intersectional lens

You can watch and share our Breaking the Bias dialogue featuring a panel of expert change makers discussing the intersection of gender and racial identities in relation to lived experience and implement their recommendations about how to embrace equity.

Free Film Festival Tickets

Mosaic is a proud returning Community Partner of this year’s Human Rights Watch Canada Film Festival for the film No U-Turn.

This film screens Sunday, March 12 at 1pm in Toronto, followed by a panel discussion. The film screens virtually Canada-wide March 13 to 19.

Synopsis: As a young man, celebrated Nigerian director Ike Nnaebue left Nigeria taking the route via Benin, Mali, and Mauritania to Morocco where he was forced to turn back, unable to reach Europe. He retraces the journey he made over 20 years ago.

Next Generation

Since January, you have helped deliver 16 workshops to nearly 600 students!

These workshops were focused on topics like 'Communicating Through Difference' and 'Social Change: the Individual and the Collective'. Program Managers Steph and Amal, along with facilitators Nafisa and Wendy, worked with St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School in Nobleton, Ontario and Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario as part of their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Day on February 15.

Thank you to the school educators for working with us to help youth develop knowledge about the importance of understanding identity and the other, and to create their own social action plans to create change in their community.

Thank you to RBC for your support of this program.

IDERD 2023

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination marks the day police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid in 1960.

This date calls on us to reflect on the fact that Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities in Canada continue to face racism every day, and to re-commit our efforts to address it.

On March 21, Mosaic’s Executive Director Leigh Naturkach will moderate a dialogue as part of the University of Toronto’s Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office’s IDERD Day event: Deepening Knowledge and Building Strategies: Faith, Anti-Racism and EDI at the University of Toronto.
